Hot Vacations in January
Curator’s statement

These are three destinations I’d want to travel to in January because of their climate and what they can offer travelers. I attended a Mexican wedding at a hacienda outside of Mérida, ate some of the best tacos in Mérida centro and have driven around it enough to know that it’s truly a special part of Mexico.

I have some of my closest family friends in Dubai, and I imagine how nice it would be to see it in January when you can spend more time outdoors. I’d love to eat more incredible Yemeni or South Indian food. Some of my favorite meals have been in Dubai with friends.

Lombok is the kind of place that you want to keep visiting. I’ve been twice and am eager to return to these tranquil islands with such kind, warm people.

Yucatán, Mexico

The Yucatán peninsula has been incredibly popular because of the Riviera Maya but many travelers don’t always make it to the Yucatán state. The capital of Mérida has beautiful architecture, museums and delicious gastronomy. Pueblo magicos or magic towns, like Valladolid or the yellow town of Izamal are also gorgeous and places to explore.

From swimming in a cenote to cool off from the heat, to walking along the Paseo de Montejo in Mérida or seeing the Mayan city of Coba. Yucatán is a culturally rich state and stays hot year round. The food is incredible! Whether it’s street tacos of Cochinita Pibil or an incredible culinary dining experience in a fine dining restaurant in Mérida.

Dubai, UAE

Whether it’s your destination or part of an extended layover, Dubai is a city that’s excellent for solo, couple, and family travel. Consider wandering through Al Fahidi's historical district to see the architecture. There are restaurants from famous chefs in Dubai, so the culinary scene is on another level. You can go mix fine dining and street food and try cuisines that are completely new to you.

If it’s shopping you’re into, then you have several malls to choose from of both high street and luxury shops. If the beach in January is your style, why not relax at Jumeirah Beach and bask under the hot sun.

Lombok, Indonesia

Lombok is a more relaxed island compared to neighboring Bali. With great beaches and surf, and different activities as well as ways to explore, Lombok has options for families, honeymooners and solo travelers. January will be its rainy season, but it stays hot and will be mellow.

If you stay on the north side of the island, you’re close to Gili Islands, each of the islands having its own vibe. They’re perfect to visit for day trips. The south side of Lombok has the best beaches for lounging or surfing- experienced surfers can enjoy Mawi- as well as cafes and restaurants. If you’re a hiker, you might want to climb Mt. Rinjani to see the sunrise or sunset.

Need to Know

All three destinations have an incredible food scene, activities and even shopping. The Yucatàn state is lush, culturally rich and has some of the best food in the region. Dubai has amazing restaurants, shopping and a number of fun things to explore. Lombok is relaxed and best for relaxation, culture and beaches.

I'd recommend the Yucatán with friends or solo, Dubai with friends or family and Lombok with a partner or family.
